Vehicle extrication is the process of removing the vehicle from around a person that has been involved in a motor vehicle accident, when conventional means of exit are impossible or unadvisable. A delicate approach is needed to minimize injury to the victim during the extrication. This operation is typically accomplished by utilizing chocks and bracing for stabilization and hydraulic tools, including the Jaws of Life. Standards and regulations can be found in NFPA 1670 and 1006.

What Emergency calls do wildland fire engines respond to?
Q. What Emergency calls do wildland fire engines with the USFS or BLM etc respond to?, I heard they respond to vehicle fires, and obviously wildland fires, but do they respond to cliff rescues, vehicle extrication, or medical aid calls?

What is the specific role of Emergency Services Units and contrast to the Fire Department's roles?
Q. (Particularily NYC) I know that ESUs perform vehicle accident extrication, EMS for a variety of causes, and Search and Rescue applications. My understanding is that those tasks are mainly for the fire department. So why do the police do those? That's like a firefighter carrying a gun. (thank god they don't!!! =) ) Perhaps a better question to ask is why does the NYPD and FDNY have overlapping skills?

Where can I get some Salvaged vehicles donated to my fire department?
Q. My fire department is looking to teach a "hands on" vehicle extrication(cutting up and tearing apart) course; however, we can't seem to get anyone vehicles donated to us. In the past it was easy to come across, but nowadays they want to charge an arm and a leg for a wrecked piece of junk for us to train on in order to hopefully be able to save them on one day! All in all, our department is located in SouthWest Louisiana (Lake Charles, LA to be exact). If anyone knows where we could come across some vehicles that had: windshields intact, doors intact, and roofs intact (we could use more than 1 vehicle and we dont need everyone of these criteria on all the vehicles)? Thanks for any and all help! Lieutenant I've been around to several Junk… [cont.]

A. Check the local salvage yards to see if any of them are interested in the tax write off or having their logo and name on the side of the vehicle (Donated By...). Place a small ad in the local paper and stress the tax write off potential for the donation (generally more than the junker is worth).
