I've tried using KNOX unflavored gelatin added to sugar and water, but no bacteria was growing. First of all, should I increase the amount of sugar? Do I even need the sugar to begin with? Second, should I heat the mixture? How should I change this setup in order to make a viable environment for my bacteria? The Internet is being vague...

A. Honestly, you're likely never going to get it right - it's just not a pleasant environment for bacteria to grow. Here are some specific substitutes for agar: If you really have to use gelatin, then you need some appropriate food - sugar is not appropriate. Instead, add some beef bullion to the mix before it sets. Follow package instructions for Knox gelatin prep... boiling it won't matter to the bacteria after it sets. Also, being out of the fridge is going to make it break down more quickly, and get ready for some funky smells. But since it's only till Weds, I think you'll survive the stench. The best thing to do though is to go to an educational supply store, spend the 4 bucks, and buy a bag of dry agar, and prepare it according… [cont.]
